What is Kupkari?
Kok Boru, Ulak or Buzkashi, as the sport is also called, is a millennia-old tradition of all Central Asian countries as well as in Afghanistan. You could say that it is a kind of football on horseback, because here too the round must go into the goal. Where the gate - called Kazan - is a large, elevated container, which resembles the cooking pot (also called Kazan). And more importantly, the ball is not a ball but a beheaded goat and weighs between 30-40kg. The players, high on the horse, must first lift the goat off the ground and then maneuver into the opponent's goal. The opponents, however, try to grab the goat. The game is so wild and forth, which is why it is also called the "wild polo". In Uzbekistan the winners, several rounds are played, usually get a prize money and something useful for the household, such as a carpet. But sometimes there are special prices like camels or even a car! The prizes are usually brought by the spectators.

Kok Boru, Ulak oder Buzkashi, wie der Sport auch genannt wird, ist eine Jahrtausende alte Tradition aller zentralasiatischer Länder sowie in Afghanistan. Man könnte sagen, dass es eine Art Fussball auf Pferd ist, denn auch hier muss das Runde ins Tor. Wobei das Tor - Kazan genannt - ein grosser, erhörter Behälter, welcher dem Kochtopf (auch Kazan genannt) ähnelt, ist. Und was noch wichtiger ist, der Ball ist kein Ball, sondern eine geköpfte Ziege und wiegt zwischen 30-40kg. Die Spieler, hoch oben auf dem Pferd, müssen also zuerst die Ziege vom Boden hoch heben und danach ins gegnerische Tor manövrieren. Die Gegner versuchen jedoch, die Ziege an sich zu reissen. Das Spiel geht also wild zu und her, weshalb es auch das „wilde Polo“ genannt wird. In Usbekistan erhalten die Gewinner, es werden mehrere Runden gespielt, meistens ein Preisgeld sowie etwas nützliches für den Haushalt, wie beispielsweise einen Teppich. Es gibt manchmal jedoch auch spezielle Preise wie Kamele oder gar ein Auto! Die Preise werden meistens von den Zuschauern mitgebracht.

However, the game type and the rules vary from country to country. At the World Nomad Games the game was played according to the Kyrgyz rules. Two teams of four players compete against each other. In Uzbekistan, this is usually a bit confusing. Because it is often played in villages on special days. There are then several dozens of players on the field and everyone plays against everyone. Also, there is only one "gate". The goal is here on the sidelines and is a hay circle.
Kupkari is a dangerous sport for humans and animals. There are always injuries, sometimes deaths.
Regeln:
Die Spielart sowie die Regeln variieren jedoch von Land zu Land. An den World Nomad Games wurde nach den kirgisischen Regeln gespielt. Zwei Mannschaften mit je vier Spielern treten gegeneinander an. In Usbekistan ist dies meist etwas unübersichtlicher. Da es oft in Dörfern an speziellen Tagen gespielt wird. Es finden sich dann mehrere Duzend Spieler auf dem Spielfeld ein und jeder spielt gegen jeden. Auch gibt es nur ein „Tor“. Das Tor befindet sich hier am Spielfeldrand und ist ein aus Heu markierter Kreis.
Kupkari ist ein gefährlicher Sport für Mensch und Tier. Es kommt immer wieder zu Verletzungen, manchmal auch zu Todesfällen.
World Nomad Games 2018 in Kyrgyzstan
At the World Nomad Games, the Uzbek team made it surprisingly to the final. At the previous WNGs Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan were always in the final. Uzbekistan won the semi-final match against Kazakhstan. However, the final decided the home team for themselves. Uzbekistan did not really get involved in the game, so it was 32: 9 for Kyrgyzstan.
World Nomad Games 2018 in Kirgistan
An den World Nomad Games schaffte es die usbekische Mannschaft überraschend ins Finale. An den vorherigen WNGs standen stets Kirgistan und Kasachstan im Finale. Usbekistan gewann das Halbfinal-Spiel gegen Kasachstan. Das Finale entschied jedoch die Heimmannschaft für sich. Usbekistan fand nicht ins Spiel und so stand es am Ende 32:9 für Kirgistan.
